The Presidential Climate Commission convened its 12th Ordinary Quarterly meeting in Johannesburg at Constitution Hill Precinct on Friday, 17 November to consider the final draft for adoption the Komati power station decommission and repurposing process report and review the progress on its work programme for fourth quarter of 2023.

The meeting also received a progress report on the status of the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET-IP), which comes at the back of the latest findings of the PCC commissioned Climate Finance Landscape Report and the mooted Just Transition Finance Mechanism (JTFM) which the commission will consider for a release for public comments.

Key on the Commission agenda were the issues of climate awareness and misinformation and to this end, the Commission also considered the findings of the first ever South African Social Attitudes Survey by the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) focusing on “Attitudes towards Climate Change and the Just Transition” as well as a report on the anticipated impact of El Nino on South Africa’s medium-term weather forecast by the South African Weather Services (SAWS).
