The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) convened its 17th ordinary quarterly meeting on Friday, 7 March 2025, to discuss South Africa’s climate priorities and strategic direction for the coming year. The meeting featured a keynote input from Sir David King, former UK Chief Scientific Advisor and leading global climate scientist, on the Global Climate Challenge and current geopolitics.
The Commission also reflected on the PCC’s Strategic Plan to align on key priorities for the remainder of the Commission’s term. As South Africa faces mounting climate challenges, this meeting will shape the next phase of the PCC’s work, ensuring that climate policies and just transition efforts remain evidence-based, inclusive, and aligned with national development priorities
With the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, the Commission assessed the current state of disaster preparedness in South Africa. The discussion explored potential gaps in the disaster management system and opportunities to strengthen resilience against extreme weather events and other climate risks.
The PCC remains committed to fostering evidence-based, inclusive dialogue on climate change and the just transition, ensuring that South Africa’s climate policies support a resilient and sustainable future.
