The PCC held its 18th regular quarterly meeting on Friday, 13 June at NEDLAC in Johannesburg to focus on key developments in South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET), and in-depth strategic discussions on climate finance ahead of COP30.

The meeting received an update from Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, on the status of Eskom Just Energy Transition (JET) program and an update on South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET-IP).

The Commission has invited Dr Amar Bhattacharya from the Brookings Institution and Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Esther Duflo of MIT who delivered a presentation focusing on climate finance strategies and critical reforms needed to address the socio-economic factors of the just energy transition in the approach to COP30.

Pursuant to its 2023 report on Early Lessons and Recommendations from Komati’s Decommissioning and Repurposing Project, the PCC at this meeting considered a detailed Progress Report on Komati to evaluate the project's status, upcoming initiatives, and key achievements and frameworks that can guide the redevelopment of the Komati area and broader future decommissioning of power stations as per Eskom schedule and plans
