It is quite clear that climate change has become more impactful in an accelerated manner. The IPCC 6th Assessment Report has been explicit that the science is completely converged on the anthropogenic contribution to the current global heating phenomenon. Climate-related disasters in the form of high-energy storms, floods, droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires have achieved the character of being pervasive all around the world, much more intense and more frequent. The agriculture sector has a multi-fold challenge. It has to decarbonize at a reasonable rate to enable South Africa to comply with its NDC commitments as well as not be at the victim of new trade barriers like CBAMs. This is while the agriculture sector has to adapt rapidly to avoid the increasing adverse effects of a heating planet. We need Climate Smart Agriculture. In addition, in the spirit of the Just Transition Framework, simultaneously achieve a more inclusive agriculture sector.
This dialogue of key thought leaders will help us chart a course to engage these complex matters toward CSA in South Africa.
