National Stakeholder Consultation on South Africa's Negotiating Mandate at COP29

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr. Dion George, alongside the Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), Valli Moosa, will convene a national stakeholder consultation on Monday, 28 October 2024, in preparation for the upcoming international climate discussions in Baku this November.

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11-22 November 2024.

This consultation aims to unify South Africa's stance for the COP29 climate negotiations, offer insights and updates on the ongoing international discussions under the UNFCCC, and enhance public awareness about climate change and South Africa’s efforts to address it.

Representatives from key sectors—local government, organised labour, youth, business, and civil society—will deliver statements highlighting their priorities for South Africa’s role at COP29.

The Presidential Climate Commission will also present 'Team South Africa's' key messages, detailing the nation’s position ahead of COP29. These messages will focus on important areas such as Adaptation & Resilience, Climate Action, South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the impacts of climate change across the country, Just Energy Transition funding, and South Africa’s overall Climate Change Response, emphasising the Just Transition as a central priority
