PRESIDENTIAL CLIMATE COMMISSION (PCC) HOLDS ITS JUST TRANSITION FRAMEWORK MULTI-STAKEHOLDER CONFERENCE IN JOHANNESBURG ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 5TH AND 6TH MAY 2022.

The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) was established in 2020 by President Cyril Ramaphosa to advise government and all social partners on the country’s climate change response and develop pathways to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy and society. As part of its work, the Commission is developing a Just Transition Framework: a multi-pronged practical policy strategy to guide the implementation of necessary interventions across the short-, medium, and long-term to achieve a just transition for South Africa. A cornerstone of the PCC’s 2022 work programme remains not only the development and production of the Framework, but to do that in a manner that is consultative and benefits from the views and experiences of those affected – our communities, workers, and varied stakeholder groups. During March and April, the PCC engaged directly with communities in priority transition hotspots in Secunda, Carolina, and Emalahleni in Mpumalanga, Lephalale in Limpopo, Durban South in KZN, Xolobeni and Gqeberha in Eastern Cape, and Kuruman in Northern Cape. Following the series of community consultations, the PCC will hold a national multistakeholder conference on the Just Transition Framework on 5 and 6 May 2022 in Johannesburg. The multistakeholder dialogue is an opportunity for stakeholders and social partners to share their views on what constitutes a just transition, build trust and understanding between parties, and spell out the principal elements and specific requirements of the just transition. The dialogue will inform recommendations from the Commission to government on the just transition, to be made by mid-2022.
