Launch Social Ownership Models in the Energy Transition Report 2024

The PCC launched the Social Ownership Models in the Energy Transition Report on Friday, 8 March 2023. The report responds to the Just Transition Framework's call for affordable, decentralised, diversely owned renewable energy systems and broadening of ownership of productive assets in support of the just transition.

The report explores models of social ownership of renewable energy that will conform to the ‘just transition’ imperative. South Africa’s transition to a just and sustainable energy future, emphasis on social ownership as a means to pave the way for a more inclusive and empowering approach to energy generation.

The models in the report and noted recommendations for social ownership of renewable energy is a critical to create a pathway for communities and workers to have a real say in the transition and make them primary beneficiaries of energy production.

The report highlights the yet to be realised transformative potential of renewable energy in South Africa and notes that policy makers, municipalities, civil society stakeholders need to be more ambitious in realising this potential.
