NDC 2035 Thematic Webinar: Adaptation

The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) is convening a series of thematic webinars on the recommendations on South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) 2035 to discuss the draft recommendations on the pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation, and Means of Implementation (MoI). Building on previous NDC engagements (capacity building workshops and consultations), these webinars aim to deepen stakeholder engagement on the critical themes that form the foundation of the NDCs. The 2035 update presents an opportunity to strengthen this ambition while balancing socio-economic development, equity, and climate justice. The PCC plays an advisory role to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), which is the official body responsible for submitting the NDC at COP30 in 2025 and the final commissioner approved documents will be handed over to the minister of the DFFE.

The PCCs NDC Recommendations are structured around three key themes: Adaptation, Mitigation, and Means of Implementation. The adaptation webinar will focus on adaptation where we will explore efforts to address rising physical climate risks such as drought, extreme heat, flooding, and shifting rainfall patterns, with a focus on building resilience in sectors like agriculture, water, and human settlements through appropriate institutional and financial mechanisms.

The thematic engagements will continue to:

• Hold a discussion on the PCC’s recommendations on South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) 2035 with social partners
• Strengthen a shared understanding of the adaptation NDC pillar in the NDC process.
• Provide a platform for evidence-based dialogue and inclusive feedback.
• Ensure that recommendations reflect local realities, climate science, and South Africa’s fair contribution to global climate action.
• Inform the PCC’s forthcoming Commissioner NDC Recommendations Report and Stakeholder Perspectives Report.
