On 28 November 2024, the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) convened a stakeholder workshop on Adaptation Readiness in South Africa’s Built Environment at 54 on Bath, Rosebank. This session formed part of the PCC’s ongoing Three Sector Climate Readiness Study, which examines the enabling conditions for adaptation across the built environment, water value chain, and agriculture sector.
The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, the private sector, and development partners to explore how governance, finance, and equity intersect to shape climate resilience in urban infrastructure and human settlements.
Key Dialogue Themes:
- Climate Governance and Coordination: Exploring how legislative frameworks such as the Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act (IGRFA) and the Climate Change Act can be optimised for integrated climate governance.
- Finance: Understanding the role of public and private finance in enabling adaptation and promoting restorative and distributive justice.
- Equity and Urban Informality: Addressing how urban informality must be factored into climate resilience planning and governance structures.
