16TH ORDINARY CLIMATE COMMISSION MEETING TO BID FAREWELL TO ITS FIRST DEPUTY CHAIR, VALLI MOOSA
The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) will on Friday, 06 December, convene its 16th Quarterly Commission meeting in Johannesburg at Constitutional Hill Precinct., to consider the feedback from COP29, the PCC leadership transition, and have a discussion on global and national climate priorities.
February 8, 2024, during the State of the Nation Address President Cyril Ramaphosa established the Climate Change Response Fund (CCRF), since then the PCC held 2 stakeholder dialogues in July and October 2024 to solicit views to direct the conceptualization and design of the Climate Change Response Fund. The meeting will be presented with an update on the proposals for comments and to ultimately endorse the PCC CCRF recommendation.
The commission will receive an update from Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Dr Deon George on South Africa’s participation in COP29, held from 12–22 December 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and provide insights into what the international climate outcomes mean for South Africa.
Supplementary to South Africa's undertaking the Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) on 01 December 2024, the meeting will receive a report from the G20 Taskforce on a Global Mobilisation Against Climate Change (TF-CLIMA), which will focus on advancing a green and just transition for the 1.5°C agenda.
Amongst others, the PCC will bid farewell to outgoing Deputy Chair, Valli Moosa, who has served since the Commission's inception and the Commission will also welcome the newly appointed Deputy Chair, Dr. Crispian Olver, whose term begins on 1 January 2025.
