14TH CLIMATE COMMISSION QUARTERLY MEET TO CONSIDER THE INAUGURAL OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN STATE OF CLIMATE ACTION REPORT
The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) will convene its 14th Quarterly Commission meeting on Friday, 07 June at the Constitution Hill Precinct, Johannesburg, to discuss amongst others the much-anticipated State of Climate Action Report, shedding light on the nation's progress, challenges, and future pathways towards combating climate change.
The report is the Climate Commission’s first assessment of climate action in South Africa and presents a snapshot of South Africa’s progress towards the achievement of key indicators that support South Africa staying on a pathway to limiting warming to 1.5°C, enhancing climate resilience, and improving the lives and livelihoods of all South Africans – particularly those most impacted in the climate transition.
The meeting will have an opportunity to engage the outgoing Minister of Public Enterprise, Mr Pravin Gordhan as well as the Eskom Chief Executive Officer, Mr Dan Marokane on Eskom Plans on decommissioning and progress on the various just energy transition projects as well as the Just Energy Investment Plan implementation update.
Moreover, the meeting is set to adopt the Just Transition Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Framework for all social partners and consider a Draft report on Just Transition Financing Mechanism recommendations– which encompasses interventions to address climate finance needs future action plans to address barriers requiring targeted interventions to develop a comprehensive financing approach for the just transition.
