CLIMATE COMMISSION WELCOMES PRESIDENT’S CALL FOR NOMINATIONS OF NEW COMMISSIONERS

The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s invitation and call for South Africans to nominate commissioners to serve on the second term of commission. Established in 2020 with the President as the Chairperson, the current term ends on 31 December 2025, and the new Commission will serve for a period of five years in terms of the Climate Change Act, 2024 (Act No. 22 of 2024)

The call was officially gazetted on 07 August 2025 in accordance with sections 10(4)(a) and 12(1)(a) of the Climate Change Act, 2024 (Act No. 22 of 2024) empowering the President to appoint the members of the Commission through a public nomination process. In terms of the Act, appointed commissioners, must be fit and proper persons, with diverse knowledge expertise in the socio-economic, environmental, community development and should be diversely representative of various stakeholders.

The Commission believes that the transparent and democratic nomination process will empower the President to select a body of diverse opinions, views, and ideas necessary for the PCC to continue to fulfil its mandate of advising on South Africa’s response to climate change and a just transition towards low-emissions and climate-resilient economy.

The PCC implore stakeholders, institutions, and members of the public to actively to take part in the nomination process by submitting nominations for new Commissioners, the closing date for submissions is 29 August 2025, no later than 16: 00.

“The PCCs independence, integrity and validity depends on the continued engagement of diverse sectors of society in shaping climate and development policy. We remain committed to a just and equitable society working together with all partners to drive social inclusion and a just transition that leaves no one behind” said Dr Crispian Olver, Deputy Chairperson of the Commission
