Meeting of the Presidential Climate Commission on a Just Energy Transition

The Presidential Climate Commission established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in December 2020, holds its 3rd meeting of Commissioners on the 30th of July 2021. The focus of this session will be on a just energy transition: how to cut greenhouse gas emissions from energy use and production in ways that minimize social impacts, create jobs and develop communities. Commissioners will discuss the management of a just transition in the South African coal sector, and the employment and economic impact of lifting the embedded generation threshold.

The agenda for the meeting includes:

  • Inputs on preparations for COP26 from Minister for Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Ms. Barbara Creecy
  • Remarks on just energy transition from Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr.
    Gwede Mantashe
  • Inputs from Mr. Mark Cutifani, CEO of the largest mining company in SA, Anglo American Plc, on its efforts towards net-zero and renewable energy.
  • Remarks by the South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, The Most Reverend Dr. Thabo Makgoba
  • A presentation on social & job impacts, and technology & investment choices in energy transition by Ms. Nelisiwe Magubane (former Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy)
  • Eskom’s financing requirements for energy transition by the CEO of ESKOM, Mr. André de Ruyter
  • Additional inputs on financing the energy transition will be given by the Minister for Public Enterprises, Mr. Pravin Gordhan and the Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr. David Masondo.
